Creativity "on the fly and accidentally"

With the help of improvisation, we can revive, set in motion the untouched layer of personal experiences of life, which exists in everyone’s soul! And it usually decays fruitlessly or is formed by alien words, into alien shapes.

M. Gorky.

We have been taught that there should always be space for "spontaneous", "involuntary" decisions. Because a true artist in the process of creation carries on a continuous dialogue with his or her creation. He or she not only directs, but also constantly asks the creation, trustfully consults with it, and through it – with the surrounding reality. The intention and the result here may be the same or may not be the same. An artist in the creative process not only gets what he or she wants, but also wants what he or she gets.

The most surprising feature of improvisation is in the very fact that, in the most sophisticated creative work, it is capable of producing that wonderful inversion. It is an inexplicably passionate and ambrosian feeling – when your hand acts as if it lead the thought itself, and the creation is fixed, picked up and judged by you only post factum. Moreover, as I have ascertained several times, this very resulting inversion is often the evidence of a genuine creative energy’s rise in the artist. The moment of improvisation accelerates the cognitive process in art. It enriches the creative work by the trial and error method with the creativity "on the touch", the “sudden” creativity, the creativity "bang and straight ahead".

Improvisation is the original, genuine creativity! It is necessary to become a child, to stand back from the previous experience, to drive all thoughts away and, with the help of intuition only, to extract order out of disorder, the chaos of impressions and emotions, as a free flight of willful fantasy. The result astounds not only the artist!

This phenomenon can be considered primarily as creative work without preparation, as "an attack from the move". It is here that the subjective suddenness is emphasized, which is precious because it ensures the most unaffected development of artistic thought, the absolute impartiality of the author’s perceptions. So that the images, the impressional connections, the emotional evaluations get the floor before they are blocked by our ever-present common sense, sober analyticity and wise skepticism.

The wave subordinates you. And you, perceiving its "carrying force", its immanent logic, its dictates, which it brings forward, are ready to follow the course, suggested by it. Even contrary to your own initial plans.

In this sense, improvisation can be treated as a logical model of the creative process in general. It is no accident that the concept, according to which creative work is scientifically explained as "an advancing reflection", is gaining more and more supporters. In any case, improvisation as the creative process which is original and instantaneous ("here and now"), as the “tearful” creativity (B. Pasternak), as "instant luck of mind" (Akhmadulina) gave us quite a few true masterpieces. And, of course, it is going to surprise again and again the world of apprentices, followers of the original consciousness, the true artists with its astonishing and unpredictable novelty.
