ДРИАДА

Я говорю:

Чем стала ты, сестра моя дриада,
В гостеприимном городском раю?
Кто отнял дикую вольность твою?
Где же твои крыла, пленница сада?

Дриада говорит:

Ножницы в рощу принесла досада,
И зависть выдала, в каком краю
Скрывалась я. Ты видишь - я стою,
Лира немая, музыке не рада.

Не называй меня сестрой своей,
Не выйду я из выгнутых ветвей,
Не перейду в твое хромое тело,

Не обопрусь на твои костыли.
Ты не глотнешь от моего удела -
Жить памятью о праздниках земли.

DRYAD

When welcomed by this urban paradise?

Who's taken this wild liberty of yours?

Where are your wings, you prisoner of garden?

Dryad says:

Scissors were brought to the forest by nuisance,

And envy soon gave out the secret place

Where I tried very hard to hide myself.

You see – I'm standing, and my lyre is silent.

And don't you say that I'm you sister - nor

Shall I go out of these wild branches curved,

Nor shall I go into your old lame body,

I won't be using your crutches to walk,

You won't be sipping from my destined goblet -

To live the memories of feasting Earth!
